As was custom, the royal party proceeded to the hunting grounds in a formal, colorful procession. Banners of all colors with the Harkian ruling family’s symbols streamed in the air. Dancers and jugglers moved in a highly choreographed formation around the court. Other Harkians in armor beat electrical drums and blew on twisted, metallic tubes that resembled mangled trumpets. The noise was deafening. Alice hoped that all the racket would scare all the potentially dangerous beasts away.

Through it all, the new royal couple sat together on a levitating pad, replete with soft cushions and servants bearing refreshments, along with the prince’s innermost circle.

Davios winked a green eye at Alice, before getting up to survey his weapons. “My dear, mark my words. I will catch you the fattest crimm of all. Consider it a late wedding present.”

He said it so warmly; she was almost convinced he wasn’t just saying it for show. She supposed they were truly friends, after all.

“What exactly are we hunting?” Alice asked, voice squeaking slightly.

“We hunt crimms,” Gri sneered. “That is what the Harkian monarchs have hunted for eons, human.”

“Ah. Okay.” Alice had no idea what those were. She wanted to kick herself for not doing more research before leaving the palace.

“I will try to paint you a picture of these creatures using earth terms,” Cam offered, somewhat gently. “They are as if a boar, wildebeest, and a hyena somehow combined and then grew by half.”

“Oh, that’s interesting,” Alice said. “Weird, but probably fascinating to witness.” At least two of those three animals were herbivores.

“That’s what it looks like. It craves flesh of all kinds and spits acid too. Very dangerous. That’s what makes it such good sport.”

“Yeah. Sounds like a ton of fun.”

“Princess,” Cam said, smiling. “Don’t worry. You will not have to join in on the hunt.”

“Wait, really? But Gri said… I guess she was just messing with me.”

“Gri is quite a character,” Cam said sarcastically. “I am glad you spoke with me before you went running out and got yourself killed in the wilderness.”

“Seriously, thank God—I mean, Irc,” Alice exclaimed. “Because that would seriously not have ended well.”

The hangers on to the procession began to drift off as the entire mass of people reached the designated hunting grounds. Alice had imagined that it would be a park of some sort, but this was no park. This was simply the edge of the city of Gale, where civilization met the wilderness.

Apparently, Harkos was a planet dotted with cultivated, livable areas. The rest of the land was wild, alternatingly rocky, red, mountainous regions, bright blue lakes, and swaths of thick green forests.

This hunting area was the latter type of region, all hanging vines, strange, cawing animals, thick undergrowth, and heavy shade from the canopy of trees. Alice practically held her breath as their platform began floating into the dense jungle.

Cam explained to Alice that the object was to find the crimm, leap down to the jungle floor, and make the kill. It was unsporting to simply shoot them from the elevated platforms.
